You are the Operations Manager for American Airlines. The main computer that holds all the critical equipment information and maintenance records for all flights has three main components: Monitor, the Keyboard and the CPU. All these components must function simultaneously for the computer to function. The reliability of first two components is 0.96 and 0.97 while the reliability of the CPU is .99. The failure of this computer will be catastrophic since it will mean grounding all flights till the problem is resolved. You are contemplating adding an identical back-up computer to the present system to improve overall reliability. Then, in case of a failure of the main computer, the operations will automatically switch to the back up computer avoiding any loss of continuity. a) What is the reliability of the present system? b) What will be the reliability of the proposed system with the back-up computer installed?
