You are the ombudsman for your company. The president of the company has come to you with a problem. Engineering has developed a taser that will deliver 50, 000 volts via tethered darts. Tests have shown that pain lasts for 1 minute and disables someone a minimum of 5 minutes. The company has sold 1000 to police departments and 1000 to the airlines at $400 apiece. Marketing wants to mass market to the public at $500 each. Amnesty international has labeled them “tools of torture”. Other companies selling similar weapons have reported several deaths and several injuries. Some states have banned the weapon. The president’s view is that guns cause 30000 deaths so that this is a safer more ethical product. He wants your views as an ethics expert. Further he wants to know if he should mass market this product. Why or why not? If he decides to market it, how should he do so ethically to avoid litigations?
