You are required to write an essay on a topic which has been covered in this course.
Assignment Instructions - The assignment must be 1000 - 1200 words long (not including references) and must contain the following sections:
1. Title
- An informative title - what question is being asked?
2. Introduction & Background
- Explain the background to the question
3. Results & Discussion
- Present your argument, including quantitative justification, graphs, tables, equations, etc. Depending on your topic, you may wish to include relevant mathematical analysis. Label Figures, Tables etc clearly, and provide a caption describing each.
4. Conclusion
- Summarize the results of your enquiries (brief - 50-100 words)
5. References
- Include a complete reference list. All of the cited references must be cited in the text. References are not included in the word count
Potential Topics -
1. Discuss current ideas about the processes that lead to the formation of the solar system and subsequent evolution of the Earth as a planet.
2. What can asteroids and comets tell us about how the solar system formed?
3. Explain the nebular model of the solar system. What features of our solar system can it explain?
4. Describe the methods that have and are used to measure astronomical distances.
5. Explain in detail the Hertz sprung-Russell diagram for stars. What does main-sequence mean? Are there any alternative formulations of the HR diagram that provide useful information?
6. Explain the basic Physics governing star formation.
7. Explain the basic physics of stars during their main sequence.
8. Discuss nuclear processes in stars.
9. Discuss theories of the origin and evolution of the Universe (Cosmology) and weigh up the evidence in favour and against each of the theories.
10. Investigate theories of how galaxies have evolved.
11. Discuss 'dark matter' and/or 'dark energy', Don't write an overview, choose one aspect of either or discuss how they could be linked.
12. The Jovian moon Europa is one place in our solar system (other than Earth), which could contain liquid water. Why is water so vital to life? What is the "Temperate Zone" in terms of planetary orbits? What chance is there that we will we find life on Europa? If so how? Are any probes travelling to Europa now?
11. What is the cosmic microwave radiation background? How does it give insight into the origins of the universe?
12. What is the current age of the Universe according to the Big Bang theory? How is the age of the Universe measured? Discuss recent findings in relation to the age of the Universe and the possible impact of future telescopes.
13. Research current theories on Black Holes (a very open topic).
