Written Assignment - Winter 2018
FIN320 has a writing requirement required for all sections. Each student must choose a topic based on their personal or career interests and related to money and banking. I would be happy to help you select a topic and provide guidance. A draft of the essay may be submitted for review mid-quarter, but this is not required.
Approved Topics are:
1. Bitcoin, block chain, distributed ledger, digital currencies. Concentrate on any or all of these top-ics. How do you see this technology/cryptocurrency developing into the future and what impact will there be?
2. Banking Regulation in the wake of the 2007-2009 Financial Crisis. Is it appropriate....too harsh...too loose? What would you do if you were the country's lead regulator?
3. The dramatic expansion of the Federal Reserve balance sheet in the wake of the financial crisis and its planned reduction. How will the reduction impact economic activity/inflation/etc?
For each topic, your paper must:
1. 1250words and posted into Submissions (in Word format) by February 20. Late submissions are penalized.
2. Describe past (background), present (current situation), and future (what you expect/want/hope to happen). The best papers will cover all three but be weighted toward your opinion about the future. The most important factor is that you have a view and support it. Nobody is sure about the future so no view is incorrect (it is okay and encouraged to have a view different from the one you might think I have).
3. Be your own work. Do not add significant quotations and/or citations. I am not requiring a bibliography. Rather, I prefer a list of sources that you utilized; recent articles in business/finance periodicals are good area to focus. Each paper runs through TurnItIn technology so plagiarism is easily detected.
4. Be grammatically correct and spell checked. Please utilize the DePaul Writing Center for help. Typos and grammar errors make papers hard to read and usually receive a C grade.
5. Be readable, interesting, based in fact, and have a well-formed and substantiated opinion.
