Writing and Presentation Assignment -

Guidelines -

This first piece of coursework will lay the foundation for the second, by identifying the company or organisation that you will study in increasing detail as you complete this module. For this reason the choice of a suitable organisation is a very important. The organisation may be one you have personal knowledge or experience of or an organisation about which you can obtain sufficient information from publicly available sources, for example, press articles, business magazines, annual reports or websites.

There are two elements that must be covered in Coursework 1:

• A factual report on the organisation in which you identify;
• The organisation's name and aims
• Size (it is for you to decide how this should be measured)
• Structure or the way it is organised (how you describe this will depend on the type and size of the organisation you choose)
• Success or failure (you should explain what criteria you are using to judge its success or failure)
• An appraisal of how the organisation is affected by the environment in which it operates.
• The coursework should not exceed 1,500 words in length and must be word processed. The number of words should be indicated on the front cover. If you are unable to meet the word limit, place any lengthy details in an appendix- this does not count to the word limit. Please provide a contents page.
• The assessment criteria are shown in the following table. You should keep these in mind as the target you should be aiming at. In the following section there is a little more guidance about what is being sought under each of the headings. The weightings

Presentation -

• The structure and organisation of the work - is there a clear logical progression of points being made e.g. introduction main sections/points conclusion?
• The use of English, is the spelling, grammar and punctuation correct,
• Is the language appropriate and does it capture the reader's attention?
• The physical layout and visual impact, is the text, any tables and / or graphics clear and readable?

Selection and justification of the organisation chosen -

• Is it clear why you have chosen this organisation ?
• Have you demonstrated why it is a suitable case for study?
• What is the link to coursework 2.

Quality of the data supplied -

• Are the facts supplied clear, understandable, appropriate and relevant?
• Does the data inform the reader about the organisation and its environment?
• Is there clear evidence for the sources of the facts and figures?

PEST (EL) Analysis, quality of the external analysis -

• A comprehensive review of the environmental factors that influence the organisation and the impacts in both positive and negative ways
• An analysis presented in a structured and coherent manner that demonstrates understanding of the concept of external environmental analysis
