SEE on television, as described in article?

Can Think of a Television character or characters that you have identified with in some way during your lifetime. Write about that and symbolic annihilation.

Symbolic annihilation is a term first used by George Gerbner in 1972 to describe the absence of representation, or underrepresentation, of some group of people in the media (often based on their race, sex, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, etc.), understood in Media Studies to be a means of maintaining social inequality (Wikipedia).

For the past year, people have been telling me I look like or remind them of the TV character Stella Carlin (played by Ruby Rose) in Orange is the New Black. I do not particularly identify with this character since she is an inmate in a penitentiary, but I did a face split-screen photo and can see some of the resemblances. If people are always telling you, "Hey you look just like that TV character..." you can also write about that experience for you.

Please do not discuss the character Pororo. There is a plagiarized essay on Naver.com. There are also plagiarized essays on SpongeBob SquarePants, Homer Simpson, Bart Simpson, Tom & Jerry, Minnie & Micky Mouse, and Hello Kitty. Please do not use these characters, either.

Cite TWO sources (other than Wikipedia) in your response. Also, at the end of your response leave an APA style Reference List of your sources. Review the APA Style guidelines under Course Home.

To get you thinking about influential characters, here is one list of "The 100 Greatest Characters." Remember you are choosing a TV character not a film character:

1.Viewer "Identification" with Television Characters
Being a big fan of Game of Thrones, I admit that my favorite character is Daenerys Targaryen, the mother of Dragons played by Emilia Clarke. Although I have no physical resemblance, however I admire mainly her powerful character and her intense and indestructible confidence. It is undeniable that Daenerys was born to be a leader. Moreover, not only she is pursuing the crown with an amazing certainty but she also does well during her path by freeing slaves etc. The fact that she has dragons as her children and as her protectors while she comes out of fire where "...she emerges like a goddess, untouched by the flames of a fully engulfed temple. Her newly converted subjects bow in awe" it creates an image that is very strong, shielded and completely different from the other characters pursuing the throne (Eyerly, 2016). In addition, she is brave and she confronts anyone who questions her. She is always ready to make difficult decisions and does not allow anyone to surpass her.

In addition, the way she views herself has a humbleness that underlies her confidence of leading everyone around her. It is significant that "She's not narcissistic...very empathic...invading cities, pressing freedom on people who don't necessarily want to be free - but she really isn't mentally ill" and that is why she differs from the other characters (Rosenfield, 2015). Her role seems to spread more freedom for the people that follow her while the love and dedication that she receives is without attachment. It is mentioned that "Not only is Daenerys possibly the most mentally sound person in Westeros, but your love for her is totally normal, healthy, and non-co-dependent" something that even in real life it is a challenge (Rosenfield, 2015). Most relationships have some sort of codependency. Love or being in love with someone, with an idea, with a goal that one wants to achieve, while being free from the result and not depend your happiness on the outcome is something rare.

Ideally, accepting reality or a person as it is can create an immense peacefulness. Daenerys character portrays peacefulness beyond imagination because while she strongly wants to be the queen, however she is not disturbed by any doubts of herself.

To summarize, the reason I am attracted to this character is not only because I identify personal characteristics and beliefs, but also I admire certain things that I wish I could have. I can relate to some extend with her confidence, power, dedication to her goal and her bravery. However, I do admire her constant strength and how she never doubts herself. I unfortunately sometimes revisit my goals or question myself if I made the correct decision. I have observed some fear of failure but also some fear of success that underlies my emotional state sometimes. Moreover, I always felt the need to feel safe; therefore the dragons for me are portraying metaphorically a security that Deanerys may turn to at any time. I have wished for such security internally numerous times within my life. In addition, being detached from the outcome has also been a challenge for me. Even though this is a character from fiction, nevertheless it is parallel with reality if one can decode what she is representing. She is basically the freedom, the power and the peace that every human seeks in their daily life. (Words: 487)

2. For a few hours, I was thinking about which character is most similar like myself. But it was hard to find the character that I look like or have same personalities. But I finally found that Frank Underwood played by actor Kevin Spacey from "House of Cards" has similar personalities like me. First, both of us we have a double personality. For example, when I get angry from the work or someone then I sometimes throw the stuff, which is right near me. Also, Frank Underwood sometimes throws the glasses when he gets mad in drama. And he and I have a convince communication skills to restore other people's depressions. When I was in high school one of my friends had a depression that he wanted to suicide himself. But I approached to him to listen and make him feel better all the time by talking in person and texting. Frank Underwood, he also convince the congressman and help to overcome his depression. In the March 11, 2015 Psychology Today article, " The Case of Francis Underwood"," author Shaili Jain M.D. explains that Underwood have no antisocial personality disorder. He lied to everyone so that billionaire and the president have a wedge that he created. So that Underwood he can be a future president. And he has a impulsive personality. He has a plan, plot and scheme that regards to his political career. The author details those impulsive personalities could not be happen unless he didn't have a good education or social status.

Also, he doesn't have any regrets to kill someone who are disrupting his career. He can sleep well and eat a food without any guilty conscience. It might be sounds crazy but I think that I have a similar personality as his. For instance, I can do anything to achieve my goals by betraying the friends or co-workers. He and I have a similar aspiration to success the career. But at least, I don't kill someone or doing a crime because that is out of the line. And I think that these kinds of thing are also happening in school too. For instance, we are competitive with other students. So sometimes I asked to my friends to get some help. But when they asked me to get some help I normally didn't help very well than they helped me before. Because the school also made for a competitive society so that the students fighting for a grades. Sometimes I feel sorry for them but I'm doing what I need to do for my future career. I might be looking selfish but it is happening in everywhere such as high school, college, stock companies, and political areas. Author Ashleigh Schmitz's Parade article, "Frank Underwood's 15 Best Quotes from House of Cards." (February 20, 2014) details Underwood's dialogue. One thing that I like was "For those of us climbing to the top of the food chain, there can be no mercy. There is but one rule: hunt or be hunted." This dialogue reminds me the similarity of personality. His ambition, aspiration and personality are pretty similar to me and it was interesting discussion to find his backgrounds and his dialogues.
Finally, Frank Underwood and I literally don't like similar or same. But I heard sometimes from my friends that my face look like a bear. And I think Frank's image also look like a bear too. I don't know this sounded like a insult word in United States but in Korea, among the young people we talk with our friends which animals that we look like such as cat, dog, bear, or pig, etc. (605words)
