Write the given assignment.

Identify the characters in one of the following stories. Describe each character in the story as protagonist or secondary (or as antagonist, if there is one), as static or dynamic, as flat, round, or stereotypical. For each identification, give evidence from the story to support your choice. Identify the tools the author uses to develop the character.

"The Possibility of Evil"  Shirley Jackson
"Son in the Afternoon"  John A Williams

The introductory paragraph should include a BRIEF summary of the plot. You should also summarize your findings as to the use of character by the author. For example, "Ben Neihart provides detailed description and exposition of his main character, Joe. His character is made clearer through his thoughts and actions. Other characters are less rounded, but allow the reader to understand more about Joe through their interactions with him."

At least two subsequent paragraphs should include:
1) the character's name, description, and role in the story (protagonist, secondary character)

2) your finding of the character as round, flat, or stereotypical, with supporting evidence

3) your description of the character as static or dynamic, with supporting evidence

4) evidence of tactics the author uses to reveal the character to the reader

The first of these paragraphs should describe the protagonist, and the second should discuss the antagonist, if  there is one. Each paragraph which follows should describe (in groupings, as appropriate) any other secondary characters. If there are more than 4-5 characters in the story, it is acceptable to group them-if they are alike in all points and serve the same role in the story. "Fellow students" or "Siblings" or "townspeople."

The concluding paragraph should do just that-come to a conclusion about the author's use of character in the story based on your analysis in the central paragraphs (this should be an echo of your introductory declaration, not a newly-introduced concept).
500-700 words; please include word count at the end of your final page.
