-Use of shadows the sources / influences of film noir

-German expressionism

-many salient elements of film noir originate from German expressionism

these elements include:

- Chiaroscuro lighting

- Urban setting

- "narrative patterns" including flashbacks and voice overs

- subjective dream sequences other influences include "hard boiled crime/detective novels" and also the "Hollywood crime and gangster films of the 1930s social context of film noir: world war II, cold war/McCarthyism
