Journal articles are usually short papers on specific topics, such as a specific clinical intervention or medical condition. They are regularly published in issues or parts of journals (also called periodicals or serials) - each journal will contain many articles written by different experts in the field. We use these journal articles for many reasons; one reason is to keep up-to-date on research and clinical practices in your subject area so information is kept up to date. It is easy to read, because they are generally shorter than books and narrowly focused. They may contain high quality information, as most are peer-reviewed (methodically edited and checked for quality). They are available on and off campus, and can be read on screen, printed off or saved as a pdf and the regular frequency of publication often means they are more current than books.
