Criticism of Photographs

Length: 2 pages; typed and double-spaced

Format: Please include the following information in your written review.

Description:

Describe the photograph so someone who can't view it will be able to construct the image in his or her mind. Be sure to include: the name of the gallery or museum, the name of the artist, the title of the image, the size and the process. You should write a detailed construction of the image usingnouns and include lots of "what is it information". This part of the review could easily be one page in length.

Analysis:

This portion of the review should discuss the composition of the photograph. How do the visual elements of the image interrelate? Words that you should be using could include: shape, line, color, pattern, texture, harmony. Analysis statements will assume more of a tentative character than the description. The word, "seems", will occur frequently.

Interpretation:

You will be discussing meaning or symbolism in the photograph. Why do you think the photographer made the photograph? What ideas do you think they want to convey to their audience.

Evaluation:

What is our response to the photograph? It is always easier to review an image that you found enjoyable. Please include the reasons you had a positive response to the image.

Medium - black/white photograph, color, other
Detailed construction of image using nouns -"what is it information"

Analysis:

Have the visual elements of the image been discussed? Can you imagine the composition?

Interpretation:

Has the meaning of the image been discussed in enough detail? Evaluation:
What was the response to the image (positive or negative)? Why? Give examples to back up your statements.
