Systems Thinking

According to the book Understanding Management, “Systems thinking is the ability to see both the distinct elements of a system or situation and the complex and changing interaction among those elements.” (Richard L Daft and Dorothy Marcic, 2017, p. 40). Systems Thinking consists of the whole as a system, composed of a set of interrelated parts. It considers the system as an indivisible whole and not simply as the result of the sum of the parts that originate it. It is very important to know that this system have strengths and also weaknesses, and the most important weakness is that if the organization is not managed as a coordinated whole, there would not be any synergy between managers, so the organization will not work. However, “Managers need to understand the synergy of the whole organization, rather than just the separate elements, and to learn to reinforce or change whole systems patterns.” (Richard L Daft and Dorothy Marcic, 2017, p. 41). In conclusion I think that the principal systems thinking approach to deal with weaknesses is that managers need to understand subsystems interdependence and synergy, which will help “managers to look for patterns of movement over time and focus on the qualities of rhythm, flow, direction, shape, and networks of relationships that accomplish the performance of the whole.” Richard L Daft and Dorothy Marcic, 2017, p. 41).

Contingency View

According to the book, “the contingency view tells us that what works in one setting might not work in another.” (Richard L Daft and Dorothy Marcic, 2017, p. 42). The Contingency view tries to provide something more useful and practical for the management of complex organizations. The most important weakness in the contingency view would be the lack of harmony between an organization and its environment because it leads to inefficiency. In conclusion to deal this weakness as in the book says, “when managers learn to identify important patterns and characteristics of their organizations, they can fit solutions to those characteristics.” (Richard L Daft and Dorothy Marcic, 2017, p. 42).

Total Quality Management

TQM is a management strategy which “focuses on managing the total organization to deliver between quality to costumers, moved to the forefront in gelping U.S managers deal with global competition.” (Richard L Daft and Dorothy Marcic, 2017, p. 43). The TQM has been used in manufacturing, education, government and service industries “but these ideas emerged partly as a result of American influence after World War 2.” (Richard L Daft and Dorothy Marcic, 2017, p. 42. It is called "total" because it cares about the organization of the globally considered company and the people who work in it. One weakness that could affect a lot this model would be if the organization doesn’t have employee involvement. Acoording to the book, “employee involvement means that achieving better quality requires companywide participation in quality control.” (Richard L Daft and Dorothy Marcic, 2017, p. 43). In conclusion to deal this weakness all employees need to be focused on the costumer, with the goal of giving them the best attention to reach the opportunity to find out their needs and expectations.
