There are numerous misconceptions about scientific writing.  One is that real scientists do very little writing - writing is only for people in the humanities.  Nothing could be further from the  truth.  Whether a research scientist, a natural resources manager, or a worker in a biotech company, all scientists spend a tremendous amount of time writing.

Guidelines for Writing a Scientific Paper

Most people write the scientific paper in this order: 1) Results (figures then text), 2) Materials and Methods, 3) Discussion, 4) Introduction, 5) Abstract, 6) Title, and 7) Literature Cited. We will discuss the sections of a paper in that order.

Instructions in this template are indicated in italics, you should delete all italicized text before submitting your lab report -

• State what you found about the distance between trees on the east side and their sizes. Make sure to cite statistics appropriately in the text. Insert your scatterplot, including an informative caption for your figure.

Discussion

• Why do you think the distributions on the east versus west sidesdid or didn't differ?What processes might have caused the patterns of dispersion you observed? On the east side, did distance between trees predict their sizes? Is the pattern consistent with your predictions based on intraspecific competition? Are there other processes that might have contributed to this pattern?
