What about the social impact of being known as someone who is blown the whistle?

The stigma of being known as a snitch is extremely difficult in today's society! Whether or not a person is labeled as a snitch is one of those circumstances that might cloud whether or not any individual person decides to become a whistleblower. Balancing these interests with the possibility of being ostracized, are we ultimately going to decide to not get involved? How bad must an ethical breach be before we throw these other concerns out the window, and move forward, perhaps by approaching the authorities?
