Warm-Up Activity 8.1: Milgram Study

Your textbook presented a famous study by Stanley Milgram that studied the reaction of people when asked by an authority figure to execute tasks that might harm someone. After reading the Milgram study, read Burger, J. (2009, January), located under your weekly resources, that reviews the study in a contemporary context.

Warm-Up Activity 8.2: Office for Human Research Protections

Visit the Office for Human Research Protections (OHRP) website located under your weekly resources, and read about the Belmont Report, which provides ethical principles and guidelines for protecting human subjects for research purposes. Review the following industry resources, located under your weekly resources, on ethical research practices:

  • CITI Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative
  • Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct

Assignment

For this task, you will pull together your learning from the previous assignments to create a quantitative or qualitative mock research prospectus. The required components for your prospectus are as follows:
Quantitative Prospectus - Include the following:

  1. Topic Area and Statement of Significance
This section usually includes a literature review. For the purpose of this course, you are not required to include a literature review here. Simply state the topic area and statement of significance in one or two paragraphs. SUPPORT YOUR proposed TOPIC AREA FOR INVESTIGATION WITH AT LEAST 5 scholarly sources.
  2. Research Question and Hypothesis
Select a research question that would be appropriate for your area of specialization or experience. Note the research question, as well as the null and alterative hypotheses. Be sure to identify the independent and dependent variables you are studying.
  3. Research Method
Clearly state why a quantitative method would be appropriate given your research question(s), and clearly state the type of method (quasi- or experimental) you propose to use, citing the course text as appropriate.
  4. Research Design
Include the following information in this Research Design section:
    1. Population.
Define the population you propose to study and its characteristics. This should include, but is not limited to: 1) age; 2) gender; 3) ethnicity; 4) additional cultural factors; and 5) education level. Justify our choice of population to study.
    2. Sampling.
Define your method of sampling the population (for example: random, convenience, etc.). State how you would gain access to the participants. Justify your choice of sampling method.
    3. Procedures.
Describe the treatment(s), conditions, intervention(s), etc. Explain and justify your choices.
    4. Measures.
Briefly describe the measures you will use to assess the predictor and the outcome. For example, if you are measuring motivation, you will describe briefly and provide a reference for a motivation scale. Explain how the measures adequately operationalize the constructs they measure.
    5. Ethical protection of participants.
Describe any ethical issues you foresee with your study. Make a preliminary assessment of the level of risk associated with participation in your study that might need to be raised with the Institutional Review Board.
    6. Validity.
Discuss ways in which the results of your study may not be valid, i.e., discuss the problems and limitations in your design that may lead to misleading results.

Qualitative Prospectus - Include the following:

  1. Topic Area and Significance
This section usually includes a literature review. For the purpose of this course, you are not required to include a literature review here. Simply state the topic area and rationale for the importance of your proposed topic in one or two paragraphs. SUPPORT YOUR PURPOSED TOPIC AREA FOR INVESTIGATION WITH AT LEAST 5 scholarly sources.
  2. Research Question(s)
Select a research question that would be appropriate for your area of specialization or experience. Note the research question and explain your phenomenon of interest.
  3. Qualitative Research Method
Clearly state why a qualitative method is appropriate given your research question, and clearly state the type of qualitative research design (case study, ethnography, phenomenology. etc.) that you propose to use, citing the course text and activity readings as appropriate.
  4. Research Design
    1. Population.
Define the population you propose to study and its characteristics. This should include, but is not limited to; 1) age; 2) gender; 3) ethnicity; 4) additional cultural factors; and 5) education level. Justify your choice of population to study.
    2. Sampling.
Define your method of sampling the population (for example; random, convenience, etc.). State how you would gain access to the participants. Justify your choice of sampling method.
    3. Data Type and Collection.
State the type of data you need to collect and how it would be collected. Explain how the data you collect will answer your Research Question. Discuss how this data and collection method is appropriate for your qualitative research design. Justify your choices.
    4. Role of Researcher.
Briefly, but explicitly, state biases, values, personal interest in the area and experience with it, and discuss how these would affect your study.
    5. Ethical Protection of Participants.
Briefly state any ethical issues you foresee with your study. Make a preliminary assessment of the level of risk associated with participation in your study that the Institutional Review Board might need to consider.
    6. Validity.
Discuss ways in which the results of your study may not be valid, i.e., discuss the problems and limitations in your design that may lead to misleading results. Be sure to address the validity concerns related to qualitative research.

You need to support your prospectus with at least 5 references from academic journals, and the course text.
Length: 10-12 pages

Your paper should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts presented in the course by providing new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic.

Your response should reflect scholarly writing and current APA standards. Be sure to adhere to Northcentral University's Academic Integrity Policy.
