Waiting for Superman Movie Assignment

Be sure to answer all parts of the question. Most questions can be answered from your text, but some concepts you will need to use the Internet to find more information about them, or read additional materials I have provided for you.

The more detailed the answer the more points you will receive. Each question is worth 10 points and will be subjectively graded based on how well I think you answered the question, how creative your answer is, and how few typographical errors you present.

You may use any sources to help you answer the questions, including but not limited to your textbook and the Internet. But remember DO NOT PLAGARIZE. If you plagiarize another person's essay answer you will receive a "0" for this assignment and I will report it to the college for disciplinary action. Remember that punctuation and grammar matter.

Please either use this form and place your responses after each question, or use a different Word document but clearly identify where each question response begins and ends. You will be penalized if I cannot tell which question you are answering.

Also, read all of the questions before you answer them. Some questions are similar to each other, but there are items in the film that work better for each one. The expectation is one (1) page double spaced per question. Some answers may be shorter and some longer.

I would also say that answers that are less than two paragraphs (7 sentences minimum per paragraph) will be penalized. For any concepts that are in the question, be sure to offer a definition of the concept before you provide examples.

1. When considering this "lottery" type of methodology in choosing who can go to the charter school, and when you think about the theories of deviance from chapter 8, do you think this methodology contributes to, or helps create deviance?

Which theory of deviance best applies to this situation? What happens to the students who were not chosen for this opportunity? Use examples from the film to support your answer.

2. What is meant by the "hidden curriculum" in education? How do conflict theorists feel about it? How might this curriculum influence children's outcomes? Use examples from the film to support your answer.

3. What is "gatekeeping?" Tracking?" How to functionalists rationalize this behavior? Do you think it is a fair practice? How do you think children are affected? What other barriers might be in place to prevent everyone from receiving a good education? Use examples from the film to support your answer.

4. What is meant by the "Rist research?" What other studies have been done to show how teacher's perceptions of students can influence student outcomes? How would a symbolic interactionist interpret these findings? How to these expectations feed into student outcomes? What examples of this did you see in the film?

5. Define teacher tenure? How does it work? What are the benefits? Are there consequences to teachers receiving tenure? How does tenure affect student outcomes? Use examples from the film to support your answer.
