VoIP Part 1 (Work Breakdown Structure)

• This assignment contains two (2) deliverables: a summary document to be delivered in a MS Word processor document format and a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) to be delivered in a MS Project file.

Overview

As the project manager for an IT department, you have been assigned to manage the project of deploying a new VoIP phone system to the company's campus. The campus consists of three (3) different buildings, each with twenty to fifty (20 to 50) workstations. The project must be completed in ninety (90) calendar days starting on November 1.

Deliverable 1: Summary (MS Word or open source equivalent)

1. Write a one to two (1-2) page summary document in which you:

a. Summarize the project requirements and other assumptions (e.g., budget, human resources, workload, environmental dependencies, etc.).

b. Define a work breakdown structure and describe the methodology behind constructing one.
Deliverable 2: WBS (MS Project)

2. Use Microsoft Project to create a WBS which:

a. Contains at least five (5) main tasks, one for each of the PMBOK® process areas.

b. Contains at least sixty (60) line items distributed in ten (10) or more work packages.

c. Contains Work Breakdown Structure Code for each task.

d. Presents a duration estimate for each task which results in a duration estimate for the project not to exceed the requirements described in the overview.

• VoIP Part 2 (Gantt and PERT Charts)

Update the Microsoft Project file you created in VoIP Part 1 (Work Breakdown Structure) with the following changes:

• Set property values to denote progress in at least fifteen (15) of the line items.

• Set properties so that at least one (1) of the main tasks is behind schedule.

• Create a Gantt chart for your project.

• Take a screenshot of the Gantt chart which can later be inserted into your written paper.

• Create a PERT diagram that identifies the critical path.

• Take a screenshot of the PERT chart which can later be inserted into your written paper.

Write a two pages paper in which you:

7. Compare and contrast the information that one receives from a Gantt chart, versus that of a PERT diagram.

8. Examine the advantages of using a Gantt chart over a PERT chart and vice versa. Determine when it is appropriate to use one over the other. Justify your response.

9. Assess the importance of the critical path in project management.

10. Insert the screenshots of the Gantt and PERT charts you created based on the provided criteria. Elaborate on the status of the VoIP deployment project based on the updated information.

Note: The graphical representations do not count toward the overall page requirement.

11. Use at least two (2) quality resources in this assignment. Note: Wikipedia and similar Websites do not qualify as quality resources.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

• Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA format.

• Import completed diagrams, charts, or screenshots into the Word document before the paper is submitted.
