Utilitarianism is the most common form of ethics in use today - but not the only ethics available to you. What is important is that this is an ends-based ethics; that is, it is focused on outcomes and consequences of decisions. It works by a Principle of Utility - important to understand as that happiness is produced as an outcome of decisions and actions and unhappiness is minimized. Yes, there is a single criterion for ethical decisions, and it is the amount of happiness produced as a result. Measuring happiness is, of course, a VERY complicated matter.
