Introduction

In Trinidad and Tobago from the 1920’s to the 1950’s there were approximately eighty thousand strikes by workers in collaboration with the trade unions to highlight the situation endured by these workers. This situation was finally corrected through the passage of the Industrial Stabilization Act of 1956 and the Industrial Relations Act of 192 by the Dr Eric Williams government. These two pieces of legislation assured the workers of the right to representation by a trade union to an employer once that trade union had more than fifty percent of the workers were active members of that particular union, a specific process for the resolution of disputes, a court called the Industrial court to solve these labour disputes and a membership certification board to regulate all trade unions.
