The Discussion Board (DB) is part of the core of online learning. Classroom discussion in an online environment requires the active participation of students and the instructor to create robust interaction and dialogue.

Every student is expected to create an original response to the open-ended DB question as well as engage in dialogue by responding to posts created by others throughout the week. At the end of each unit, DB participation will be assessed based on both level of engagement and the quality of the contribution to the discussion.

At a minimum, each student will be expected to post an original and thoughtful response to the DB question and contribute to the weekly dialogue by responding to at least two other posts from students. The first contribution must be posted before midnight (Central Time) on Friday of each week.

Two additional responses are required after Friday of each week. Students are highly encouraged to engage on the Discussion Board early and often, as that is the primary way the university tracks class attendance and participation.

The purpose of the Discussion Board is to allow students to learn through sharing ideas and experiences as they relate to course content and the DB question. Because it is not possible to engage in two-way dialogue after a conversation has ended, no posts to the DB will be accepted after the end of each unit.

When formulating strategies, there are 5 categories of strategy formulation available to utilize: directional strategies, adaptive, market entry, competitive, and implementation strategies. To be effective, the strategies must be formulated in a specific order.

Why is it so important to formulate strategies in this specific order?

Provide an example of each category of strategy formulation for discussion.

Based on your perspective, is one type of strategy formulation more effective than another for an acute care hospital? Why or why not?

In your own words, post a substantive response to the Discussion Board question(s) and comment on other postings.

Your response should address the DB question(s) and move the conversation forward. You will be graded on the quality of your postings, including mastery of the concept as well as critical thinking.

If asked for your opinion, do not simply state that it is a good or bad idea; elaborate on your reasons and argument.

Include enough detail to substantiate your thinking as well as your position on the questions or comments.

On this week's chat I reviewed the components of the Individual Project and common mistakes I see in its completion. Here's a quick summary of some tips:

-start early. This project is to demonstrate your understanding and ability to apply the SWOT analysis and how it directly ties to the strategic plan. Allow sufficient time to thoughtfully complete the project.

-make sure you provide 8-10 elements under each of the SWOT categories. You need to explain why what you have listed is relevant/important to the organization and how it relates to the strategic plan. A simple bullet list of 8-10 items for each category is not enough information.

-summarize the SWOT findings and provide a clear discussion of how this information impacts the 3-5 year strategic plan.

-Part 2 asks you to apply the 7 steps of contingency planning as it relates to strategic planning. This is not a disaster plan. Please see Unit 5 MUSE lesson 2 for a description of these 7 steps and make sure you apply the steps to the outpatient surgical center setting.

-integrate references into both Part 1 and Part 2. You'll need 2-3 references for each section. Show all references on the separate reference page in APA format. If you are uncertain about APA formatting check the guidelines from the AIU library.

-make sure you hit the minimum length for the project of at least 7 pages not counting a cover page or reference page. It's fine if you go over the 7-10 page requirement. The project does not need an abstract though you are welcome to include one if you like.
