Training is very important to employee development, but what if the employee is not ready or able to learn the information provided. Training employees is understanding how ready they are to learn.

Mathis (2008) explains an employee's readiness to learn in three separate steps:

1. Ability to Learn: Learners must possess basic skills in order to complete training successfully.

2. Motivation to Learn: If there is no motivation to learn the material there is a higher chance of failure.

3. Self-Efficacy: Self-Efficacy is defined as a, "Person's belief that he or she can learn the training program content,".
