Tourism can provide benefits to both destinations and tourists. For destinations, benefits include employment and economic growth. For tourists, benefits include the opportunity to learn about and experience unfamiliar cultures.

Tourism can also have negative impacts, however, such as degradation of the natural environment, loss of cultural identity, degradation of important sites and artefacts, and exploitation of local people.

For this reason, Destination Management Organisations strive to develop appropriate strategies for sustainable tourism that enriches both visitors and local communities.

Cambodia is a Southeast Asian nation of approximately 16 million people. Its landscape spans mountains, low-lying plains, the Mekong Delta and a coastline on the Gulf of Thailand. In the 1960's Cambodia was a prominent tourist destination in Southeast Asian. However, protracted periods of civil war, insurgencies, and the genocidal regime of the Khmer Rouge saw Cambodia's tourism industry reduced to virtual nonexistence.

Tourism in Cambodia has substantially recovered since the late 1990s. It is now a major industry for the country, providing vital foreign exchange to Cambodia's growing but still fragile economy. Tourism based around Cambodia's rich cultural heritage is particularly prominent, with the number one attraction being Angkor Wat, an ancient temple city, in Siem Reap.

While Cambodia has much to offer, it also faces many challenges, including lack of infrastructure and widespread poverty. You are to assume that the Cambodian government has commissioned you to write a report, with recommendations, on appropriate strategies for destination management and marketing.

The objectives are to enhance awareness of Cambodia as a destination with rich authentic culture, increase visitor arrivals and encourage longer stays for those who do visit.

The interests of local communities must also be considered, including concerns related to cross-cultural communication and loss of cultural identity.

Any negative images and/or perceptions of Cambodia must also be addressed.
