When creating learning objectives for an educational program, the provider must first use an active verb. This helps specify the behavior change that you expect to be able to measure as a result of learning (Maine Nurses Association, n.d). A learning objective is only measurable once the person participating can perform the task that is identified in the learning objective. The next step is to plan how to achieve the purpose of the class. First you must ask yourself three questions:

• "What do I want the participants to accomplish/learn?"

• "How will the participants demonstrate that the desired information has been learned?"

• "What verb will I use in the objective to indicate what the participant will do to demonstrate information learned" (Maine Nurses Association, n.d.)

Learning objectives are there to show the steps that need to be taken by the individual toward meeting a learning goal. This may involve the development of knowledge, skill or change in attitude. Objectives are stated in behavioral terms and are useful when they contain these components: "the learning and a precise action verb that indicates what the learner will be able to do; the conditions under which the task is performed; and the level of performance expected" (Edelman, Kudzma&Mandle, 2014). Such objectives help guide the content selection and methods, as well as narrow the focus of the teaching plan to more achievable steps. They also help in setting standards of performance and suggest strategies for evaluation.

Creating learning objectives needs to be in a manner that is very clear and measurable to allow the patient as well as their families to understand what exactly it is that they need to accomplish and learn. If providers didn't have an educational program where the objectives were specific and understandable, as well as measurable, then the patients and their families will most likely not learn much, if anything at all.
