Topic: The education of children's rights in schools in Greece

Details:

I submitted my research proposal to my supervisor and I got a detailed feedback about the changes that I have to do.

Therefore, I attached you my previous research proposal.

I would like you to focus on the feedback from the supervisor and re-write it, as she wants.

Feedback:

I think you need to provide some more detail though before progressing to drafting the ethics application. You introduce the topic by an explanation of why you regard it as important to educate children about their rights through schools, but you don't refer to any literature in this section and, importantly, you don't provide an indication of what we know to date about children's rights education in Greek schools or what teachers think about this topic. So, first of all you need to try to situate your project within the research base, showing what is known and what your dissertation will add to that. Second, your research questions are not entirely clear: I think in each case you mean to ascertain what teachers think about these questions, e.g. not 'What should teachers know about children's rights?' but how important do teachers think it is for them to know about [and teach?] children's rights?

The second question, for example ['to what extent is children's rights education important for children's development'] can't be answered objectively by teachers - it would need some kind of empirical research demonstrating improved developmental outcomes for children who were educated about their rights (difficult to achieve). But you could ask teachers what, if any, advantages there are from teaching children their rights. Then for the third question I think that you need to know what is happening in Greek schools at the moment, including by asking teachers what, if any, steps they take in their classrooms/schools to educate children about their rights (what does the literature say about that?). The final question is a little unclear - is it/can it be teachers' responsibility to influence community approaches?

You state under chapter 2 (literature review) that you will tackle the research questions here, but really here you need to set up the research questions, by exploring what we know already about children's rights education in Greece and then explaining how your study will add to or develop that knowledge. What are/is the theoretical perspectives/conceptual framework you will consider/use? I'd like to see the literature review broken down a little into sections, to show what you will cover.

Chapter 3 - methods
You don't need to go through all possible methods here, just briefly state why you have chosen the methods that you have. So, you need to state in the proposal why you will do both questionnaires (how many? how will schools and teachers be identified and accessed?) and interviews (again, how many?). How will you be confident of finding teachers who will have a good understanding (are there schools that you know teach children's rights that you can seek to access?). How will you analyse both the questionnaires and interviews? Ethics: you can't approach teachers directly in the school office, but will need to ensure they don't feel obliged in any way to take part.
