Therapeutic communication is essential. This required cultural competence and may be challenging when dealing with individuals who have different backgrounds, beliefs, and values than you.

Explain how you would respond when an individual's values conflict with yours. How would you communicate with that individual and/or their significant others and families? What aspects of the communication process can you use to overcome any potential barrier.

Therapeutic Communication for Health Promotion

After completing this unit, you should be able to:

• Compare the three levels of prevention (primary, secondary, and tertiary) with the levels of service provision available across the lifespan.

• Develop strategies to promote therapeutic relationships and patient centered care, with diverse populations across clinical settings.

• Compare theoretical and conceptual models of health promotion behavior and education.

Course Outcome(s) practiced in this unit:

Apply theoretical and conceptual models of health related behavior and health promotion education to the individual, families and communities.

Healthier Individuals, Families, Communities, and Nations

Nurses in advanced roles need to think beyond traditional roles and borders. Often nursing is thought of as focusing on "individuals, families, and communities" where people work and live, and frequently on those who are acutely or chronically ill. However, as the world rapidly evolves into a global community, you need to consider the overall health of individuals, families, communities, and nations.

The introduction section of the course text examines the way individuals define health and health problems, which are important because definitions influence attempts to improve health and care delivery. A broad and longer-term perspective of health is the best guide to promoting health more effectively.

The Therapeutic Relationship and Health Promotion

This unit covers the importance of the therapeutic relationship and the role that it plays in health prevention and promotion. In this unit, you will choose one screening methodology for a preventative health initiative, based on the national Clearinghouse guidelines. Additionally the unit explores frameworks for functional health patterns and the need for assessment by the master's prepared registered nurse.

Health promotion is based upon assessment and determines the health status of individuals. In this unit you will explore the framework of functional health patterns and discuss the use of health patterns to assess individuals throughout their lifespan.

Therapeutic Relationships in Health Promotion

Values are qualities, principles, attitudes, or beliefs about the inherent worth of an object, behavior, or idea that guide action by sanctioning certain behaviors and disavowing others. Values and beliefs are essential factors in design and implementation of health prevention/promotion initiatives. To serve the unique and diverse needs of patients, it is imperative that the master's prepared registered nurse understand the importance of cultural differences by valuing, incorporating, and examining their own health related values and beliefs.

A health promotion Initiative or proposal begins with an idea which must be supported with data, theoretical application and evidence based practice while taking into consideration the value system of not only the master's prepared registered nurse, but of the specific population they are caring for. Understanding the time, person and place in epidemiological study population samples, helps the master's prepared registered nurse to consider these concepts in communication to varied groups.

Relating to a variety of persons offers many challenges and rewards for nurses. This unit provides guidelines for developing therapeutic relationships, considering values clarification, communication and helping relationships as the core components of the therapeutic relationship, which is the primary arena for health promotion and prevention. Rising use of technology and mounting pressures for cost-effective care are here to stay.

In this climate, the importance of the therapeutic relationship is underscored. Without a relational context, the care dimension in healthcare is lost, and health promotion is reduced to standardized, recipe-like prescriptions. Effective health promotion, founded in epidemiology and directed toward the needs of individuals, families, and communities, requires reflection on the value of caring, effective communication, and a helping relationship.
