The three levels of prevention include primary, secondary and tertiary (Fletcher, Fletcher, Fletcher, 2014). Simply stated primary prevention is the prevention of a disease from occurring (Fletcher, Fletcher, Fletcher, 2014).

Secondary prevention is the early detection and treatment of disease (Fletcher, Fletcher, Fletcher, 2014). Lastly, tertiary prevention reduces the complications of a current disease someone may already have (Fletcher, Fletcher, Fletcher, 2014).

With children either getting ready or already have gone back to school, immunizations will be required. This is an example of primary prevention.

Most schools are going to require a child be immunized prior to going back to school (). In 2012 parents vaccinated their children 89.2% of the time with the recommended childhood immunizations (Frew, et.al, 2016).

In 2014 this number increased to 90.8%, which is an improvement from the past years (Frew, et.al, 2016). It is important for children to be vaccinated so that they will not contract some of the childhood diseases that could become an outbreak (Frew, et.al, 2016).

Here in Jacksonville, Florida, the Florida Department of Health has three clinics that are available to the residents of Duval County that will provide immunizations too low to no income families for free (FDOH, n.d.)

Secondary prevention would include your health fair every year to update or enroll in medical insurance through employers. During these health fairs the test your blood for increased lipids and sugars (Weisman, Brooks, 2015). They also check your blood pressure. If your cholesterol returns as a high number, they can advise you to go and see your primary care physician (PCP).

This, in turn, could have you educated on diet and exercise as well placed on some medications to get those numbers down (Weisman, Brooks, 2015). By going to the health fair for health insurance, and then your PCP and getting medications, you may have alleviated some of the negative results.

Persons that are diagnosed with PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) that is receiving treatment is an example of tertiary prevention. Clinical intervention is related to the treatment of signs and symptoms (). If the patient sticks to the treatment regimen, it could prevent other comorbidities. (Florida Department of Health, n.d.). Therefore, it is a treatable disease.
