South Africans have faced several concerns in the energy fields. Major concerns include the depletion of fossil fuels and the increase in electricity cost. We live in a world were energy demands are high due to the increase in human population. People often aim to use alternatives to overcome these issues. Tidal energy is an option to generate electricity and overcome the issue of depletion of fossil fuels. This method Is Ideal since South Africa has an unlimited amount of this type of resource i.e. the ocean. This method is fairly new in South Africa however a few countries have already implemented tidal wave power generation. This thesis will concentrate on a design that will determine if 10 MW of power can be generated using tidal wave technologies. Literature in the form of books, journals and conference papers will be used to familiarise and understand the concept of tidal wave power generation. Discussions with subject matter experts and technical personnel will be considered. Design calculations and simulations will be performed and the results will be discussed.

Research Problem and Aims

Renewable energy is by far a good alternative to overcome the Increasing energy demand, depletion of fossil fuels and high electricity cost in South Africa. Hence, tidal wave energy as a form of renewable provides a good option in generating electrical power and this help to overcome these problems. The advantage of using renewable energy in form of tidal power is because South Africa has vast coastlines which can be used to set up tidal power plant.

The aim of the research is to determine how much electricity can be achieved using tidal energy in South Africa.

This research is aimed at finding solutions to the following questions:
- How to analyze the concept of Tidal waves?
- How to deduce the amount of energy present in wave?
- How to convert the tidal energy efficiently into electrical energy?
- What is the methodology that is possible to produce electricity?
- What are the processes involved in this energy conversion process?
