In last night's presidential debate as the opponent answered questions and responded to each other, there was an observation of power and influence that each candidate possessed. Donald Trump relayed on coercive power, legitimate power, and referent power when talking to the American people, or attacking his opponent. Donald Trump is known for his abrasive and unfiltered personality which plays to his referent power as a celebrity. When talking to the American people Trump relies on his legitimate power as a CEO, and he plays to inspirational appeals of the Americans who may have lost jobs. Trump also utilizes the pressure tactics to strike fear in American when talking about the economy, the war on terror, and the race and policing issues that are occurring.

On the other hand, it was observed that Hillary Clinton relied on Legitimate and Expert power more in her address to Americans and her opponent. Hillary's titled as senator and Secretary of the State was utilized to justify why she was the better candidate for the presidency, and it was utilized to apply more credibility. The power tactics she utilized were legitimacy, rational persuasion, inspirational appeals, consultation, personal appeals, and coalitions. Although, Donald Trump was unfiltered and on the attack, Hillary had to maintain her composure because if she had to retaliate it would have been viewed as un-presidential and temperamental. All in all it was an interesting debate that played out as expected.
