This module is designed to develop a detailed awareness and understanding of the important role that the Operations function plays in the creation and distribution of products and services and the contribution that this function makes to the success of all organisations.  It focuses primarily on the link between the strategic goals of the organisation and the Operational Strategy developed to contribute to the achievement of those goals.

It also looks at the key decisions taken by operations managers and the impact that they have on the effectiveness of the organisation

Module Aims

  • To provide a conceptual evaluation of the function and techniques of production and services in operations management.
  • To recognise and discriminate between the levels of strategic decision making in the production/service operation function and differentiate between issues; large and small.
  • To retain a strong analytical approach to the management and control of operations management and strategy.
  • To provide a conceptual evaluation of the pressures and influences on organisations from the environments in which they operate.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Evaluate the nature of the production/operations environment and identify appropriate strategies.
  • Identify and apply problem-solving strategies for a range of production/service operations situations.
  • Make immediate contributions in a production/service operations environment by critically analysing the weaknesses and opportunities offered by an existing operation.
