Overview

This and the next chapter present theoretical and empirical material concerning prejudice and discrimination. Although these concepts are addressed in separate chapters, they are related as Merton's typology illustrates. LaPiere's classic study of the relationship between racial attitudes and conduct is presented.

Several theoretical perspectives used to explain prejudice are presented. Psychological theories (scapegoating and authoritarianism) are presented as ways of understanding why a particular person may be prejudice. Exploitation theory, based on Marxism, explains prejudice as a mechanism for excluding racial and/or ethnic groups when there is conflict over economic resources. The normative approach explains that prejudice is endorsed by a cultural climate that values/favors some racial/ethic groups over others. No one theory is enough, but several approaches taken together offer a framework for understanding prejudice.

Empirically, prejudice is examined in terms of stereotypes and labeling. Racial profiling as an explicit use of stereotypes is discussed. Use of the Bogardus Social Distance Scale is described with changes in social distance through the 20th century. Trends in attitudes towards race-related issues are presented.

A critique of earlier research focused low self-esteem in minority groups provides more recent findings that dispel the connection between structural location and self-perceptions. Findings from a national survey are presented to demonstrate intergroup prejudice and hostility.

Two mechanisms for reducing prejudice are discussed ? education and the mass media. The importance of the contact hypothesis (contact between people of equal status) is explained, along with the presence of a common goal.
