Read the Performance Appraisal at Telespazio: Aligning Strategic Goals to People Development case study. In your teams, discuss the assessment of employees within the Telespazio organization.

Develop a written description (750-1,000 words) discussing current evaluation methods, how the organization uses the appraisal assessments to identify employee roles, the current appraisal systems, performance ratings, and Telespazio's practices for performing appraisal interviews.

As a group, decide what changes or strategies could be implemented to Telespazio's current performance appraisal practices.

Hi Marquita and Kisha,
I have started the process - this is how I set up my papers. I write down the points that need to be addressed, I jot down my response to those items, then I go back and attach "reference" material to each point. It helps me to write the paper so that I can put ideas in my own words as well as have proper citation.

Please feel free to express your own ideas on how the paper should be addressed - I am open to any suggestions. If you are okay with this beginning....

Note: the page references are to the Telespazio article. Maybe you two could save this file and add to it using a different font so we know that new ideas were added.

-Current evaluation methods

The supervisor and employee complete the evaluation and identify weaknesses and possible training activities. The supervisor and employee also each have an opportunity to discuss their individual points of view (p. 10).

The method is meant to motivate and develop employees, they are to recognize their weaknesses, face their problems, and take action to improve.

The process is relevant/constructive - feedback is given on strengths and areas with needed improvement.

-How the organization uses the appraisal assessments to identify employee roles

(p.6) All organizational and technical/professional skills and competencies related to each organizational role (i.e. job analysis) have been identified. (CMS)

-Current appraisal systems
Incidents - document behaviors exhibited during the assessment period - concrete facts.

-Performance ratings
To be improved, standard, outstanding (a four level rating system is used later).

-Practices for performing appraisal interviews

Gather information, fully explore performance and skills that need improvement (identify gaps) (the "should be" vs. "what is"), and define appropriate training.

We, as a group, need to decide what changes or strategies could be implemented to the current performance appraisal practices, identify an appraisal tool that would benefit the company, and describe an effective method for performing an appraisal interview. Describe the benefits of using both the appraisal tool and the appraisal interview method in the performance appraisal practice.

On page 12-14 the company has identified some of their problems - i.e. the "halo" effect - all reviews are outstanding. They need differentiation among the employees - maybe "ranking"? On page 14 the company explains their new "T-PAD" process and the requirement that less than 15% of the employees receive an outstanding classification.

I think they need to invest in a training program for the folks that are completing the appraisals.

They also have an issue with the employees that are "loaned out" to different departments for projects - I believe the person that is their DIRECT supervisor and witnesses their work should be the one conducting the appraisal interview.
