If you are analysing the relationship between 2 variables there are 3 possible cases.

Case 1: If you want to the relationship between two categorical variables compare the proportions of the different groups

Case 2: If you want to find the relationship between a categorical and numerical variable you can compare measures of center and spread for each of the group.

Case 3: If you want to find the relationship between two numerical variable you can produce a scatterplot describe any patterns (page 2 has some examples of patterns)If you want to investigate the relationship between numerical variables you can use a scatterplot, In simple terms if you are asked to describe the relationship between two numerical variables there are 4 possible answers, positive linear, negative linear, nonlinear and no relationship

Case 1 working with two categorical variables

If you have a dataset with different categories, it is very common to want to compare the categories

Case 2 working with a categorical variable and a numerical variable.

As another example If you have one numerical such as the time spent on the cardio machine and one categorical variable such as gender male/female you should compare a measure of center and measure of spread

Case 3 working with two numerical variables

If you have two numerical variables such as the time spent on the cardio machine and time spent on weight machine you can check if they are related with a scatterplot
