This assignment will draw on data from the World Health Organization's (WHO) Global Health Observatory(GHO) website, which can be accessed at this link http://www.who.int/gho/countries/en/. Full instructions for obtaining the data can be found at the end of this document. You will also be asked to read about the Millennium Development Goals, which you can find summarized at the following location http://www.un.org/en/events/pastevents/millennium_summit.shtml.

To begin this assignment, please read about the Millennium Development Goals, discussed at this link:

http://www.un.org/en/events/pastevents/millennium_summit.shtml. Now and in the future, you will be expected to know the following information a) what gave rise to the Millennium Development Goals, b) what the 8 Millennium Development Goals were, and c) what 6 values the goals are based on.

For this assignment, choose two countries from the hundreds available at the GHO website. You can choose any country except the United States. Please choose two countries you are interested in learning more about, for personal or intellectual reasons. For instance, you might want to pick a country because you are thinking of pursuing a study abroad there, because you visited there in the past, or because you are doing or have done a paper in another class on this country.

For each country, please fill in the separate sheet, replacing bracketed statements with your own words or copy and pasted graphs from the WHO GHO report. You can copy a part of a PDF document like the WHO GHO reports in Adobe Acrobat by selecting "Take a snapshot" from the edit menu. If you are using different software, you should be able to look up how to copy a portion of a PDF document.

A partially complete example is provided at the end of this document. Based on what is written, I would give the example a B+ or A-. It could be improved by bringing additional information from the report, such as evidence that health spending is rising, or more evidence that the risk factors discussed in section 5 are in fact the source of the problems. There is room to paste in additional supporting evidence on question 5, but I chose to make the argument from a different angle. If I had provided more evidence there, this would be closer to an A level assignment.

Instructions for Accessing the W.H.O. G.H.O. Source Material Data

1) Go to the website and click on the country that interests you and click on its hyperlink.

2) When you arrive on the next page, click on "Country profiles - health statistics summarized for major health topic

3) This will bring you to another page. Click on the link marked general health statistical profile, which will download a PDF document that you can read and copy from in a PDF reader.

4) The PDF document should look like this, but contain a report on your chosen country rather than the U.S.A.
