There are points in the negotiation where it may appear that the parties are at impasse and need some time away to reflect, cool off, and return to negotiating with renewed energy and purpose. In formal negotiations this recess is called a "caucus" and is a tactic used by both parties during the negotiation process. The caucus may be used several times by the parties during the negotiation until an agreement is reached or a real impasse occurs and the parties actually do "walk away". This can also be used in personal negotiations where "walking away" is not an option. Comments?
