There are many diseases, disorders, and pathologies present within our population.  These can range from topics you may or may not have heard of, such as ALS (made popular by the ice bucket challenge), obesity, multiple sclerosis, autism, etc. 

You should choose a disease/disorder/pathology that you are interested in, and do the following:

First, I would like you to discuss the background of the pathology.  (Example: Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune disease of the central nervous system....)  Please do a PENDERS description of the pathology-Pathophysiology, Etiology, Natural History, Diagnosis, Epidemiology, Treatment (Rx), and Signs and Symptoms.  (The PENDERS description MUST be at least 3 pages)

• Pathophysiology-whatis actually happening to the body at a physiological level?
• Etiology-whatis the cause of the disease/pathology?
• Naturalhistory-whatis the natural progression of the disease (ex. Is it a disease that will progressively get worse?  Is it something that takes a certain amount of time to "heal"?  What amount of time is that?)
• Diagnosis-Howis the pathology medically diagnosed?  (ex. Lab tests, MRI, etc.)
• Epidemiology-Whatare the statistics?  (ex. Do more men get it than women?  Etc.)
• Treatment (Rx.)-How is the disease treated or handled, medically or otherwise?  (ex. Medically would include things such as medication, surgery, etc.  Other techniques might include physical therapy, massage, etc.)
• Signs andSymptoms-Whatare the signs and symptoms of the pathology?

Second, create a wellness intervention program for the pathology, including how you would teach this information to the participants.  Ultimately, this project is a culmination of the entire course regarding how to teach health education to patients/people.  You must create 4 community education wellness classes that are each 1 hour in length, as if you were really doing this for the actual population. 

• Example: For multiple sclerosis, two primary areas in health management are fatigue management and health behaviors/lifestyle change. 
• If I chose this topic, I would create an intervention program consisting of a community-based series of classes for 4 weeks (1 class per week) to teach people with multiple sclerosis health management behaviors, exercise, fatigue management, stress management, nutritional awareness, responsible health practices, goal setting, social support, etc. 
• Each of the 4 classes needs to have:
  • Description of what the participants would learn at each class (2-3 objectives of what the participants can expect to learn)
  • Atimelinefor each class, detailing how much time you will spend on each topic (Ex: 0-3 minutes: Introduction; 3-10 minutes: Review handout 1; 10-20 minutes: practice exercises seen on handout 1...)
  • Create the actual power points or handouts that you would give to participants, as if you were actually doing this program.  The educational handouts will be assessed on their quality and thoroughness.
