There are 3 components of victory you need to be aware of as a leader.

1. Unity of vision

Teams succeed when there is a unity of vision, no matter how much talent or potential there is. That's true in sports, business, nonprofits, even families. If everybody is pulling different ways, pursuing their own agenda, the team can't win.

2. Diversity of skills

Many leaders forget that best teams need diversity of skills. Business full of sales people, but without a good client care team isn't going to get far. You need to look for diversity in all areas - cognitive (knowledge, experience), affective (personality) and conative (instincts and natural strengths). Otherwise you'll have great fun, but not such great results.

3. A leader dedicated to victory and raising team members to their potential

You can't win without good athletes, but you can lose with them. The right players with the proper diversity of talent don't come together on their own. It takes a leader to make those things happen. It takes a leader to provide the motivation, empowerment, and direction required to win.
