Social engineering is defined as the act of manipulating people into performing actions or divulging confidential information. The famed notorious hacker, Kevin Mitnick says “The weakest link in the security chain is the human element”. Please read the articles and view the videos in the week 6 reading folder before posting to the Week 6 discussion forum on the class Discussion Board. Do you think people are the weakest link in a security system? How secure is your home system? Do you think you have taken enough precautions to secure your computer system and keep it safe from computer crime? How vulnerable are you to identity theft, botnets and other computer crimes? Do you leave your computer on overnight? Why might this not be a good idea? How many different passwords do you have? Do you change them? Are they easily hacked into? Do you use a computer at airports, hotels, coffee shops? Give at least two examples where social engineering was used to compromise a computer system.
