The spread of Buddhism in China brought changes in religious ideas and practices, changes in literature and art, and changes in the values and daily lives of families and individuals.

Give THREE examples of such changes, including at least ONE contextualized direct quotation from a primary source assigned for the class.

(You may substitute an image for one of the quotations if you wish. Please include the image in your paper if you do.) These include:

· Relevant selections from Ebrey, Chinese Civilization: A Sourcebook (87-108, 132-138, 199-201)

· The Platform Sutra, the Heart Sutra, Mulian Rescues His Mother, Princess Miaoshan, Tang Poetry (all on iLearn).

· The iLearn PowerPoint of Buddhist art

· Monkey

Please note that Ebrey, The Cambridge Illustrated History of China is NOT a primary source, and that you should NOT quote from it directly. You should, however, read it carefully and use whatever you've learned from it in your own words in your paper.

Likewise, my lecture notes are a SECONDARY source, so you shouldn't quote me directly or footnote me, but you're welcome to put anything you learned from me in class in your own words and use it in your paper

Your paper should have the normal features of an essay: a meaningful title, a point of view expressed in an introduction and conclusion, clearly defined paragraphs that systematically provides evidence to support your point of view.

Citations should be in parentheses, with author's name (NOT the editor of the anthology, if you're using it), title of the selection, and page number. Proofread carefully, revise accordingly. Please do not give me a first draft. This assignment must longer than 3 pages.
