The role of religion and God in natural disasters and catastrophes has been debated for a long time. Throughout time some have proclaimed that these devastating events are the "Hand of God" punishing people and nations for their "sins".

Others have often cited passages from different "Holy Writings" that God is "Protector and Savior" in times of trouble.Many organized religions have and continue to make very significant contributions after disasters strike with their relief efforts. Many of the World's religions have also played a role as "guardians of culture and preservers of historical texts".
