PEER 1

My Picture Book: Enchanted Dreams(2017). By Erin Smith

Color (Hue), "Classified as either warm or cool" (Coats, 2013). Considering the young age audience for my picture book I chose warm hues, with pictures of light browns and greens. The colors are soft, inviting, and non- threatening. The fairy and Queen in my book are calm, endearing, and supportive, "browns often signify earthiness, solidity, and dependability" (Coats, 2013).

According to Karen Coats, author of Children's Literature & the Developing Reader, most children under the age of nine would prefer high saturated colors "degree to which the color is pure," but she also mentioned children associate the colors they see with the emotions they feel. I wanted this book to have a calming and safe effect, therefore choosing the warm hue colors.

Shape, line, and textures are flowing and non -invasive. The meaning behind a troubled thought being calmed by an endearing and loving friend needed a calming texture and flow through the horizons.

Characters and icons are engaging in this story of encouragement. These life like animated characters are caring, and dependable, even when the King is feeling alone and wanting to give up. Characters are endearing and give a sense of safety

Composition and point of view of a King who is in a state of despair and shown resting on the ground in the middle of the forest again the tree. The Tree fairy is trying to watch over the King and give him something for guidance as she towers over him in the tree listening to his worries. The moon Queen is calm and endearing as she looks peaceful and lovely resting on the enchanted deer.

This enchanting story is a wonderful way to get kindergarten age children intrigued in the importance of not giving up, and learning the importance of having someone to lean on. It's a fun and colorful storybook, with easily understandable words and age appropriate comprehensions. I believe they will enjoy the wisdom of the tree fairy, the loving approach of the moon queen, and relate to the Kings troubles and sometimes wanting to give up when they feel they cannot do something.

PEER2

Creating a storybook can be somewhat of a challenge because there are so many things that go into making a good book for children! A few of the elements of a good picture book are color; shape, line and texture; characters and icons; and composition and point of view.

In my story the colors are a little saturated, and the hues are cool with a lot of blues, purples, and greens. As Coats says "A good illustrator will use color strategically to complement the story's meaning and help children track the narrative" (2013). Pictures support the story and add an extra oomph to make the story more interesting.

The shapes and lines in my story are soft and flow in the picture. I did not add hard edge lines or shapes in my story to make it seem like a dream. If this book was printed I would add more texture to the pictures to add more depth and make them pop on the page.

The characters in my story are not very obvious. I had a difficult time finding just one girl that was the same for each page. There are small differences in the character from page to page, but if this book was printed I would make sure each little girl was the same. This would help the children relate to the little girl in the story a little more.

The point of view of this story is just about one little girl and how she deals with scary situations. It is told in third person and is relatable to other children who experience similar things. The composition does not take the reader through the day-to-day activities of the character, they give an over view of a situation she deals with.

I think kids would enjoy this book because it is relatable situation that other kids deal with, a lot of kids are scared of the dark and going to bed alone at night. This book discusses this in a fun way and how one little girl overcame her fear.
