The Privacy Act of 1974 prohibits the US government from storing many types of data about its citizens. The act does not, however, say that the government cannot purchase said data from a third party. Such data may include information the act prohibit the government from storing. So, with this in mind, if the government participates in these action against the act, is this considered an ethical behavior on the part of the government? What about the third party selling the data? Are you in agreement with this practice of buying and selling data? Why or why not?
