The Panama Canal is undergoing a major widening. As a port owner/administrator what would you do to create a competitive advantage as a result of the widening and the post-Panamax hulls?

To be able to create a competitive advantage, one of the things that I will do as a port owner so that I am able to compete with the other ports as a result of the widening of the Panama Canal is by first ensuring that I improve on the level of technology at my port. Ships and businessmen at large will bring their ships and their goods to ports that clear goods and forwards them at a fast pace. This is because the faster goods are cleared, the more quickly their business moves for them. Having a quick and efficient technology of clearing goods will give my port a competitive advantage over other ports.

The next thing that I would do is to increase the level of security at my port. When goods are stolen from a port, most ships would find it unsecure to dock their ships at such kind of a port. When the port is secure, ships will find it easy to bring their boats and ships to the port and offload them there and that will give me a competitive advantage over other ports. This can be done by increasing the CCTV surveillance cameras in the docking place as well as increase the number of guards at the port (Transportation Research Board Special Report, 2008). The other thing that can be done is by increasing the number of patrols in the areas of ocean near the port.
