The globalization of communications and the growth of the Internet have had profound effects both on corporations and on the ability of stakeholders to mobilize to make their opinions heard. Evaluate the pros and cons of this aspect of globalization for both corporations and their stakeholders, and analyze whether or not you think business, in the context of today’s interconnected world, is a net contributor to society and the planet.

The internet is an amazing technology that is brought a tremendous amount of information and knowledge to all stakeholders. Unfortunately, the internet is also filled with a tremendous amount of misinformation that is stated as a fact when it really has no truth, documented proof, or substantiating evidence to support it.

Stakeholders should utilize the internet to keep themselves well informed about corporations in their community; the impact on employees, citizens, and other stakeholder activities. A knowledgeable and educated stakeholder can be a valuable asset to a corporation. They can read and post opinions and ideas, and discuss corporate issues that may help provide solutions. Corporations should be actively involved in forum discussions, internet posts, and chat rooms. Google even offers companies a utility that will notify them when any positive or negative information about them is posted on the internet. This utility allows companies to get engaged and help identify and address issues early before they erupt.

Uneducated stakeholders utilizing the internet can cause issues by reading and posting information that is false or has a negative impact on the corporation. I know many individuals and some of them family members who believe all the hype of some corporations or political emails about candidates who are cheating the system or taking away their rights. The truth is most people are lazy and do not do the research to identify if these items are completely true, partially true, or have no truth at all. Some of this misinformation on the internet can inspire people to act passionately to fight back against the company, when there really is no wrong doing.

In today’s society, and with programs such as Corporate Social Responsibility and Global sustainability have made corporations net contributors to society. The industrial revolution negatively impacted any stakeholder that was not an investor. This “profit only” mentality is something I feel will be a thing of the past. New generations of leaders and educators who understand and implement key action items which are discussed in this class will help change the world for the better.
