The following scenario is provided as a basis for the several questions. U.S. military personnel who are stationed at outposts in hostile territory frequently come under attack by simple but deadly unguided rocket and mortar attacks. A system is needed that can destroy the projectiles while they are in flight before impacting their intended targets. A detection subsystem has already been designed based on a combination of radar and optical sensors. The detection system is capable of providing a cue accurate to within 2 degrees across a full dome encompassing the protected facility. Three candidate solutions for the kinetic kill subsystem have been identified and a feasibility study has shown that all three are technically feasible within the desired timeframe. The three candidates are: 1) a gun system that fires an exploding projectile that explodes just in front of the incoming round and destroys it: 2) a laser system that hits the incoming round with sufficient energy to cause it to detonate prematurely: 3) a laser system that focuses energy in front of the incoming projectile and creates a plasma field in the air that causes the incoming round to detonate by triggering its impact-detecting fuse. The accuracy of the cue provided by the detection system is insufficient to support any of the three candidates, so some sort of higher accuracy cuing system must be provided and shall be included with the kinetic kill subsystem. The user environment is the same as the one described for the UAS that we used as an example in class, i.e. austere environments without indigenous power supply or other basic infrastructure needs. Your job in this question is to describe a trade study that compares the three candidate approaches by writing the following: Name five system characteristics that could be used in a trade study as discriminators: describe the general approach you would follow to arrive at a recommendation. You do not need to make a recommendation (there is not enough data provided).
