The Exam will consist of case studies based on that week's required reading, and each exam is worth 50 points of your total grade. You will have to complete a case study per chapter of that week, which means you may have between two to three case studies per exam. The exam will be timed and no two exams will be alike. You will have 120 minutes to complete each exam. You have one chance to take the exam, so make sure you are prepared. Closing the exam does not stop your time. Exams are to be completed by 11:55PM on the assigned dates (You may choose to take the exam at any point during the availability period).

This Exam will cover Chapters 3 and 4 of your textbook. The exam is worth 50 points, 5% of your final grade, and you will have 120 minutes for completion.

Case Study Directions: You will read each case study carefully, paying attention to details, read the questions at the end of the case. Make sure to identify relevant facts, underlying assumptions, and critical issues of the case. After, you will select the most logical response to the question. Please make sure to reference the chapter readings within your answer. Remember that the case studies are designed to test how well you have mastered the material covered in the text and discussions. I will evaluate your answers in terms of your ability to apply course concepts.

Grading Criteria: If you answer the entire given question with thoughtful detail, you will receive full points. If you miss any portion of the given question or were not detailed in your response, you will receive half points. If you don't attempt or only answer the question with one sentence, then you will receive 0 points for your response.
You are expected to answer each case question in at least 3 well-structured and developed paragraphs, and each paragraph should comprise at least 6-8 sentences. As you develop each question, you should focus on making numerous references to concepts, terms, and ideas discussed in the textbook and discussion board assignments.

1.Please read the following excerpt, and then in detail answer the following questions.

Conflict situation: I blame my roommate for our current feud. All I can think about is getting even. Yesterday, he took my car and returned it on empty. I thought I had plenty of gas so when I took off today I was shocked when I ran out on the way to classes. I had to walk into town and carry a can of gas back to the car three miles each way. I also missed my test. You want to know what makes me mad? I know that he had the money to buy gas, and he must have driven by at least three gas stations when going through town. He just wanted to get me into trouble with my professor and mess up my grades. He must hate my guts. I am going to retaliate. He has to meet an important study group tonight, and I am going to wait till he is ready to go to tell him he can't use my car. Let's see how he feels about flunking a test?

Which conflict theory discussed in this chapter best explains this conflict?

What is really the cause of the conflict?

How could or should one resolve this conflict?

2.Analyze the following case study. Write an essay that addresses the questions that follow.

I was trying to teach a class when a student came in to remove some audiovisual equipment. He didn't explain why he was there. I had to ask him. I then asked him if it could wait until the end of the class. He said no. I said "Okay," rather reluctantly. He left, and then came back about five minutes later. I said nothing. When he came back the third time (all the while making noise and making it difficult for me to continue the class discussion), I finally said (in a level voice), "You are disturbing my class and I must ask you to stop coming in. This really bothers me." He replied, "I'm having a bad day." My female students thought the student should have initially apologized for the disruption, explaining his actions to begin with, and should have responded more adequately at the last. My male students said that I "went nuclear" on the student!

What basic concerns or interests underlie each person's approach to this conflict situation?

Which of the four communication options for dealing with conflicts are illustrated in this narrative?

What communication behavior option is preferable in the above narrative?

What changes in communication behavior by the participants would result in different outcomes?
