The Evolution of Developmental Psychology: History, Research, and Ethics

Jean Piaget, who is historically one of the most important contributors to developmental psychology and genetic epistemology, conducted systematic observations of his children from the time they were infants. This research has helped identify and describe the dramatic changes that occur as humans grow, mature, and age. Investigative methods in research seek to understand the structure of behavior and its processes, as well as the causes or determinants of behavior. When studying the structure of behavior, the correlational design is typically used. Throughout this course, you will read about a number of research studies that utilized a correlational design. There is one caveat though to keep in mind when examining correlational studies: Correlation does not imply causation.

While studying the structure of behavior often uses the correlational design, examining the causes or determinants of behavior or mental processes requires an experimental design. While research can strongly indicate a causal relationship, it is impossible to control all variables that might be contributing to the outcome. Hence, psychological research cannot prove anything to be true. Without proving something to be true, there inevitably are limitations to every study. You will notice that in the discussion section of experimental articles the researchers explain the limitations of their study and the conditions within which their findings apply.

When conducting research in the field of human development, particularly with vulnerable populations such as children and elderly adults, it is important to keep in mind that a unique set of ethical considerations should be taken into account. These populations need extra care to ensure their rights because some individuals may lack the mental capacity to give informed consent. As you approach this Discussion assignment and begin to examine types of research that have contributed to developmental psychology, keep in mind how ethical considerations might have affected the kinds of research that could be conducted.

With these thoughts in mind:

Post  an evaluation and explanation of the role of ethics in developmental psychology research, with attention to the types of populations studied within this field and the types of research that have been conducted historically. Be specific and justify your response with citations.
