The death penalty issue. The Supreme Court has ruled over and over that the death penalty in general is NOT a violation of the Eighth Amendment protection against cruel and unusual punishment. In recent years, many states have passed laws banning the use of the death penalty. Still others have enacted old methods, such as hanging and the electric chair, due to the increased difficulty in obtaining the correct drugs for lethal injection.
Indiana hasn't executed someone since 2009. Would you support our legislature debating the issue of banning the death penalty? If they did decide the practice was outdated, and no longer acceptable in the state, would you support the governor signing a law abolishing this method of punishment?
When you present your argument, think about the reasons for your position. Is it based on religious beliefs? Humanity? The cost, as opposed to life in prison?
