The 21st century manager is a person who can implement the leader's vision and mission by creating processes, procedure, long and short term goals that forward the vision, purpose, culture, and structure set by the leader for the organization. The manager does this through the implementation of the five functions of a manager, planning, organizing, leading, controlling and staffing (the five pillars of management). This week we begin our examination of the four pillars of management with the first function of management: Planning.

The planning stage of management is considered to be the most important by most because of the advantages that planning has for achieving goals. In the agile organization, planning has disadvantages as well. Using the course material as well as your own research, retrieve articles that discuss the advantages and disadvantages to planning. Then, compare and contrast the advantages and disadvantages to the planning function and explain how a manager may use both to their advantage.

The manager creates a detailed action plan formulated from the long term goals, vision and mission that are set by the leader. This plan is created through planning and strategizing. To understand the concept of vision and mission and its role in the process, you will do the leader's job and formulate the vision and mission of an organization. In week four the class will examine the vision and mission in the context of planning the goals for the same organization.

Create a vision and mission statement to fit the company described below:

Jimi Henrich owns a custom acoustic guitar manufacturing company: Jimi's Jammers. He designs custom guitars to the specific requirements of the individual customer. His guitars range in price from $6500 to the most expensive one, a solid gold model, for $35,000. Jimi desires to become the Rolls Royce of the guitar world. Currently, Jimi has a small but growing clientele. So elite is his company that he has no need to advertise as he has gained most of his customers by word of mouth. Jimi suspects that there is a bigger global market for his product. Anxious to expand the business and make the plant more active, Jimi is exploring ways to gain additional orders through product and process innovation. The end product must continue to carry the Henrich reputation for its attention to detail, personal design, and quick turnaround. Jimi demands his employees produce the revolver with these ideas in mind and never to give in to the temptation to lower the quality of the guitar.
