Technology has had a tremendous impact on education. One of the outcomes of the advanced technology since the 60s is that we are "sitting" in this classroom together. According to the U.S. Department of Education, distance learning is defined as "an option for earning course credit at off-campus locations via cable, television, Internet, satellite classes, videotapes, correspondence courses, or other means" (National Center for Education Statistics n.d). In 2004-2005, about two thirds of colleges and universities in the United States offered distance education courses (National Center for Education Statistics 2006), and the number continues to increase with the growth and development of entire colleges and universities in the virtual world.
One of the primary purposes of distance learning is to increase access by learners who might not ordinarily be able to obtain a traditional postsecondary education.
Questions arise however, regarding the level of accessibility that is truly provided to underrepresented groups throughout the United States and the world.
For this essay you are to consider the following:
• Does distance education provide new opportunities for these groups to attain postsecondary education? What are the advantages and disadvantages to the individual?
• Is distance learning "equal opportunity?" Is it available to anyone in the United States? In the world? Are new barriers created due to the increasing use of technology to deliver a college curriculum?
• From a conflict theorist perspective, how might distance learning serve to increase the gap between the "haves" and the "have nots?"
Your essay should be 1 ½ - 2 pages in length (300-500 words)
• Double spaced
• #12 font - New Times Roman
• 1 " margins on all sides
• Separate Cover Page and Reference Page
• A minimum of two (2) outside (not including texts from the course) scholarly sources
Remember: Wikipedia, encyclopedias and encyclopedia-type sources (answers.com, infoplease.com and such) are not considered academic sources
