Survey Questionnaire Assignment -

The Survey Questionnaire assignment is an individual assignment. We will be deviating from the cell phone topic for the survey questionnaire. After the survey questionnaire assignment is completed, we will be going back to the cell phone/driving topic for the final report assignment. To clarify, the survey questionnaire assignment is a different topic and is not related to the Final Report or the previous Focus Group assignment.

The survey questionnaire topic is on Tennessee High-Speed Rail. This issue has become a debate amongst residents who are for and against the project across many states. For example, California is going forward with their high speed rail project. Please read the editorial article attached that I thought gave some thoughts on both sides.

It is up to you to apply what you learned from the textbook and your own intellectual knowledge in designing your mail survey.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation has hired you as a consultant to develop a mail survey that will be sent out to residents in the Nashville and Chattanooga areas. The premise of this scenario is strictly for the purposes of this class assignment. Do not call the Department of Transportation with any questions. If you have any questions, make sure they are directed to me.

You are to develop the questions and design the survey in its appearance (hint: not being too cluttered, visually appealing, questions you start off with). It is up to you on how you design the survey. This survey would be a hybrid of a needs assessment to solicit public opinion about the potential rail project and a marketing approach to evaluate the level for demand of residents for high-speed rail.

Between the two areas, you should have at least 20 questions. You must not ask "bad" questions to make 20 questions. You will be graded on how effective your format is and the questions asked. There should be some demographic questions asked, about three to five. You need to provide answer choices to the question for a participant to choose. One note, do not list all the questions with answer choices ranging from Strongly Agree to Strongly Disagree. Do not provide an option for a write-in answer to a question. Imagine if the survey was sent out to 10,000 people, it would be difficult to sit down and go through numerous questions with various answers.

Keep in mind that you will need to design the survey and let the reader know who is behind the survey and a background as to the purpose of the survey. You want to design the survey to be visually appealing and a small image of a high-speed train may be appropriate on the top left or right. You should also be aware of how much spacing you are using as you should factor in that having more pages would increase mailing and printing costs if this was sent out as a mass mailer. You want to use the correct amount of space to effectively layout the survey and provide enough information so the reader knows what the survey is about and who is asking them to take it.

You will be using the knowledge learned from "How to Conduct Your Own Survey" textbook to design your survey. You should take into account all the best practices on designing your questions and layout design of the survey. I am attaching one example to this email from Microsoft Word that has a good overall layout. There are many ways to design a survey. The example I am providing is just one layout that maximizes spacing.
