Each student will choose to investigate one company or not-for-profit organization. You may choose any type of company or organization if there is enough information available in the sources cited below to carry out your assignment; instructor’s approval is required. You may choose a for-profit corporation, such as Home Depot or Starbucks; you may also choose to work with a not-for-profit organization, such as Habitat for Humanity or the Nature Conservancy. You may also choose a smaller, local organization. Keep in mind that there are many national and international for-profit and not-for-profit organizations that have publicly available information sufficient to complete this assignment.

This assignment requires a written analysis of the following four questions. Your answers must be based on (1) the use of at least three different articles about the company from the last two to three years that have been published in business magazines or papers, such as (but not limited to) Business Week, Fortune, Forbes, The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and (2) the company’s web page.

Assignment Questions

Provide a general description of the organization: mission, vision, size, location, is it global or local, historical highlights, organizational structure, and any other information that is relevant for the audience/reader to understand the organization better.

How would you describe the company’s current organizational culture? This assessment should be based on using the Competing Values Framework. Graph your results and provide detailed information to support your conclusions.

To what extent is the current organizational culture consistent with the organization’s vision and corporate strategies? This question asks you to consider whether or not the company has the type of organizational culture best suited for accomplishing its vision and strategic goals. To complete this question, you need to analyze the organization’s mission, vision, and corporate strategies.

If you were a member of the senior leadership team in this organization, how would you change the organizational culture so that it is better aligned with its vision and strategic goals? Your instructor will expect specific recommendations in response to this question.
